The Natura LIFE "SCI d'acqua" Project proposed by the Province of Prato was approved and co-funded by the European Union, which contributed 50% of the total project funding (1,148,535 Euro). The project ran for five years, from 15 April 2009 to 15 April 2014. The beneficiary coordinator was the Province of Prato. Other partners in the project include:
The ultimate goal of the project is to improve the state of conservation of the Species of Community Interest that are not adequately represented or are exposed to risks in the upper Apennine area and in the plain surrounding Prato. The project acronym "SCI d'acqua" refers to both the Species of Community Interest (=SCI) and to the fact that all the species identified are associated with aquatic habitats (fish, crustaceans, amphibians, wetland birdlife).
Various species of birds protected by the EU "Birds" Directive (79/409/EC) and the amphibian Triturus carnifex, included in annexe II of the "Habitats" Directive (92/43/EEC), present in the wetlands of the Prato Plain.
The White-clawed crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes*=A. italicus, a high conservation priority species, and the fish species Cottus gobio, both included in annexe II of the EU "Habitats" directive (92/43/EEC) and present in the streams of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.
